Sunriver Resort’s boutique retail store returns anew, setting the tone for a curated collection by Oregon makers, coveted brands and everyday essentials

For decades, the Merchant Trader has outfitted guests at The Lodge for whatever their day called for. A sweatshirt when the evening cooled, gloves before a morning on the mountain, sunglasses for one of the 300-plus sunny days a year here.

It still does, but this summer the store closed briefly, was entirely reimagined and reopened as a mountain mercantile, as much a place to explore as to stock up.

The New Merchant Trader
The favorites remain. Sunriver Resort shirts and coffee mugs are still bestsellers, along with hostess gifts and the cozy blankets that fly off shelves before movie nights. But the range around them has expanded significantly, and the store now carries a much wider selection of men’s and women’s fashion. New offerings include Hunza G swimwear, Birkenstock shoes, clothing from Marine Layer, Rhone and Fair Harbor and accessories from Gorjana and Krewe. As the colder months arrive, look for shearling-lined Birkenstocks and a new line of blankets for evenings by the fire.

“We took a step back and asked what this store could be,” says Amy Pendergast, Sunriver Resort’s Director of Retail and Recreation. “It has all the essentials you need for any trip, paired with a sense of discovery that makes it worth wandering through. We want people to hang out while they shop and stay a while.”

A Total Store Refresh
The floor plan was reworked with new fixtures throughout, so you can see the whole store from the door and move through it at your own pace. The preexisting fireplace now anchors the room, with lounge seating around it for anyone who wants to pause. Sitting by the fire with a warm drink has become part of any visit, as staff chat with guests and answer questions, turning quick stops into conversations. “There’s a great energy in there,” Pendergast says. “Everyone’s having fun.”

Come winter, expect a fresh-cut holiday tree, decorations galore and plenty of snow globes and tempting gifts for the season. Stop in, pull up a seat by the fireplace and see what’s new.
