On the Water Summer Adventures at Sunriver

Fun in The Sun at The Sunriver Marina

For centuries, the Deschutes River has been one of central Oregon’s greatest blessings. Flowing more than 250 miles from the Cascade Range into the Columbia River, it was a key waterway for Native Americans, and in the 19th century became a vital resource for pioneers arriving via the Oregon Trail. Today, it remains essential to the Pacific Northwest’s eco-system – as well as an essential place to experience endless fun out on the water. Sunriver Resort makes it easy to discover all the thrills of the Deschutes.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat
There's nothing quite like kayaking or canoeing down a gentle river, and there's no place quite like the Deschutes River to do it! Sunriver Resort's Marina allows you to take advantage of the incredible kayaking and canoeing available near Bend, Oregon, both on-property and just off-property. The Marina rents canoes, kayaks, and more to both resort guests and the general public and the Marina Shop has everything you need for your adventures – sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, snacks and apparel. The staff here is also full of knowledge about where to go and what you’ll see on the Deschutes.

  • For kids who want to get in on the fun, the Keepin’ It Real Kayak Camp at Sunriver can’t be beat. Ages 8-18 will spend all day on the Deschutes with a trained instructor, getting a crash course (or should that be “splash course”?) in the dos and don’ts when it comes to kayaking. (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri | 10:00am-4:00pm | $125 per person, including lunch | Reservations required)
  • Tip: Park your car at the Sunriver Marina, get a $35 park-and-ride pass and ride a shuttle back at the end of your float trip.

Learn To SUP
Maybe you’re already a kayak expert – but you’ve heard about another fun on-the-water activity known as SUP (stand-up paddleboarding)? This summer, at Sunriver is your big chance to give it a try. The resort’s What’s SUP class (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, 1:30pm-3:30pm | reservations required) is the perfect way to get your feet wet, so to speak, as a trained instructor guides you through all the basics, from proper paddling technique to the best ways to keep your balance – which is always important. The two-hour lessons are $80 per person, and for an additional $20, you can put your newfound skills to the test on a six-mile float down the Deschutes.

Float On
In the mood for a lazy river ride in the cool evening air with the whole family? On Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, Sunriver’s guides will lead you two miles down the Deschutes River in a six-person raft, your journey framed by gorgeous Cascade Mountain panoramas. Sunriver sunsets are legendary, but they look even better from the water. ($175 per raft | Reservations required).

Go On A Fly Fishing Adventure
The Deschutes River is one of the premier fly fishing rivers in the Pacific Northwest, offering the chance to land trout of all shapes and sizes in a serene and pristine setting. How can you take advantage? Cascade Guides & Outfitters provides the highest level of guiding services in Central Oregon, with over 25 years of fishing local waters. All equipment for your use during the trip is included in the price; waders, boots, fly rod, reel, line, tippet, and all your flies. Let them take care of the details and get ready for a fly fishing experience you’ll never forget.
