Bald Eagles & Their Bold Behavior
Once endangered, Bald Eagles now nest just south of Sunriver Resort. They’re often seen soaring overhead, using their keen eyesight to scavenge meals, even stealing from hawks, ravens, and otters! Don’t be fooled by brown, mottled eagles; these are immature Bald Eagles still growing into their iconic white head and tail.

Hawks, Shrikes & Their Surprising Habits
Red-tailed Hawks are the most common raptors here, helping control rodent populations. But one of the fiercest predators is the Northern Shrike—a songbird nicknamed “The Butcher Bird” for its habit of impaling prey on thorns or wire.

Owls Take Over at Dusk
As the sun sets, owls emerge. The Great Horned Owl is the most frequently seen and heard, especially in spring. Look out for adorable owlets tucked in the pines. Day-hunting Pygmy Owls and ghostly Great Gray Owls also roam the area, the latter often camouflaged in plain sight.

Herons & Their Night Hunts
Great Blue Herons, which are common around Sunriver, hunt day and night during breeding season. Watch them twist into yoga-like poses as they preen, using shredded chest feathers to waterproof themselves and coat slippery prey.
