Best Skincare Practices

Too Much of A Good Thing? the Art of Facial Exfoliation.

One of the most common questions I get from our guests is "how often should I exfoliate?" The answer is easy… it depends on your skin type. Too little exfoliation can lead to dull skin or acne. Too much exfoliation can lead to compromised skin that is susceptible to damage.

Good skincare is a very personalized practice. This is why facials are the cornerstone of good personal care. The estheticians at Sage Springs Club & Spa at Sunriver Resort can look at the skin under magnified lamps and identify the perfect self-care routines for your skin.

Exfoliating regularly is a great way to stimulate new cell regeneration. When we remove the outer layers of dead skins cells it sends a message to your skin to make new skin cells. If your skins outer layers are already thin you should be cautious of how and when you exfoliate. If you have a naturally thicker skin you can exfoliate more often and use a stronger exfoliating product. Here are different skin types, routines, and products that will help you get your summer glow on.

Sensitive or thin skin types need to be mindful to prevent additional inflammation when exfoliating. One of my favorite products is Gommage 305 from Yon-ka Paris. It treats inflammation, gently exfoliates and hydrates. It works great for inflamed acne too! Stop by Sage Springs Spa to purchase and learn the best way to use a Gommage. Sensitive skin should only exfoliate one to two times per month.

Dry skin types can benefit from exfoliation, but should be sure to use a hydrating serum afterwards to nourish the skin and prevent dehydration. My new favorite product is the Mirocrystal exfoliant from Shankara. The powerful micro crystals buff the skin and leave it luminous. It also smells wonderful. You can nourish after with Shankara's Daily Repair Serum for lasting hydration. Our spa desk is happy to help with how to use this product and provide more great information about this inspiring company. I recommend using once a week for best results.

Oily and acne prone skin is usually thicker and can benefit from stronger exfoliations. Acne is caused by several factors, but dead skin cells falling into the pores is one of them. A good exfoliation is a great way to treat and prevent oil and acne. I recommend the Yogurt Power Peel from Ilike. A thin layer left on for 10 minutes leaves skin feeling soft and fresh. Applying a clay mask from Yon-Ka afterwards will draw the impurities for clear skin results. Both of these products can be purchased at the spa. Use one to two times a week for best results.

As always, wear your sunscreen regularly to protect your skin after exfoliation. When you exfoliate, it can leave you more exposed to sun in the summer. Make sure to exfoliate at night, wear a hat the next day and be cautious of spending too much time in the sun right after application.

Happy summer glow everyone!

See you at Sage Springs Spa!
