Published on: August 21, 2020

Family Adventure Is What Sunriver Is All About!

Family Adventure is what Sunriver is all about! Central Oregon is a giant playground, for adults and kids alike. From zip-lining to white-water rafting, and everything in-between, there is no shortage of outdoor activities. And with the majestic Cascade Mountains as your backdrop, you really can’t go wrong. Building amazing memories as a family and having fun while doing it is at the center of hearts here at Sunriver.

DAY 1

BIKE THE TRAILS & KID-FRIENDLY GOLF AT CALDERA SPRINGS

First and foremost, we would like to introduce you to our mascot, Takoda, who will greet you upon check-in. This life-sized grizzly is always outfitted in the most fashionable gear, hand-sewn by one of our favorite employees, Aimee. Take a picture – he is probably the most popular bear you’ll ever meet!

Anxious to see the lay of the land? Head over to the Bike Barn, where over 300 bike rentals are ready and waiting for you! With over 40 miles of paved trails, you’ll find yourself cruising for hours – the perfect way to stretch out those legs after your journey to Sunriver.

Looking for an easy dinner with a view, and perhaps a little golf? Head over to Caldera Springs, home to the 9-hole Caldera Links family-friendly golf course and Zeppa Bistro, offering brick-oven pizza and Italian gelato, lakeside. Enjoy watching the Ospreys dive and fish in Obsidian Lake!

DAY 2

ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAINS - TAKE A TRIP TO MT. BACHELOR

Load up at Carson’s American Kitchen, where you will find an array of delectable breakfast plates and morning beverages. What’s popular? Try Bend’s famous Ocean Rolls, baked by our partner, The Sparrow Bakery, served French-Toast-style — YUM.

Today we recommend you head over to Mt. Bachelor for zip-lining! This dual-line, three-stage tour drops nearly 1,400 vertical feet along the volcano’s slopes to make it the Northwest’s steepest, fastest, and highest-elevation zip adventure. Reservations and tickets are required – learn more here. But wait, there’s more! The Mt. Bachelor Bike Park offers lift served access to more than a dozen miles of downhill trails. Their beginner lift, Little Pine serves as a great introduction to the bike park for all ability levels. From there, riders can progress to Pine Marten Express where a combination of machine built and single track trails provide a thrill for any adventurous spirit - from intermediate runs to advance double black diamond trails. So, if mountain biking is your jam, Bachelor has you covered.

Looking for something super fun that the whole family can participate in? Try your hand at Disk Golf! Mt. Bachelor's Disc Golf course is PDGA-listed. Ride the Pine Marten chair up to hole #1 and work your way down the mountain to the final hole #18. Elevation and the varied terrain add extra elements to your game! A valid lift ticket or season pass is required in order to ride the Pine Marten chairlift to hole #1. A ticket or pass is not required for those who choose to hike from the base area to the start zone.

A scenic chairlift ride at Mt. Bachelor is a summer activity the whole family can enjoy! Take in the sights of the Three Sisters peaks, Broken Top and the many Cascade Lakes. Experience views of over one million acres of pristine, undeveloped land. As summer progresses, the mountain exposes ancient lava flows, wildflowers and year-round snowfields. Your ride begins at the 6,300 foot elevation in our West Village base area and takes you on a relaxing ride to the Pine Marten Lodge perched at 7,775 feet. Lunch, dinner and snacks are available at Pine Marten Lodge, at the top.

DAY 3

EXPLORE THE LAVA LANDS & OBSERVE THE GREAT NIGHT SKY AT THE OBSERVATORY

Get a head start on the day by fueling up at Café Sintra, where benedicts and omelets rule!

For a super-memorable activity that the kids will talk about for years, book the Lava Run Experience with our partner, Outriders Northwest. Explore the Lava Lands of Central Oregon in your own off-road Polaris RZR. This is an amazing tour with great driving trails, highlights and volcano landscapes to enjoy by all ages! Let the Outriders Northwest professional guides lead you on an experience of a lifetime. Take the wheel and conquer the ever-changing terrain or sit back and enjoy the exhilarating ride. Outriders' will show you the way through the true back country of Central Oregon. Drive through winding roads and spectacular lava flows. Head up and experience advanced trails to spot the wildlife and landscape of the lava flows with spectacular geologic features. The fresh air and beauty of Central Oregon will surround you. Come check out the fascinating terrain of the Deschutes National Forest!

For Dinner, we are thinking you parents need a little something to indulge in — you are on vacation, after all, so we recommend Sunriver Brewing Company (reservation needed), which offers pub fare with an artisan flare with kid-friendly options, and amazing beer for all palettes. They also offer curbside pickup if you’d like to head back to your room or home. Top off your meal with an ice cream cone, candy or chocolate from Goody’s— a one-stop-shop for everything that makes you feel like a kid again! Feel free to browse the Sunriver Rocks and Gems or the Tumbleweed Toy Store while you are over at The Village – both fun spots for kids!

Keep those kiddos awake after dinner, because it’s time to seek the stars at the nation’s largest publicly accessible observatory, right here in Sunriver! This NASA-sponsored outlet will blow your mind. One-hour sessions include night sky viewing through various telescopes with staff astronomers, a guided constellation tour, meteorite displays, and an educational presentation. For reservations and ticketing information at Oregon Observatory, click here.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Sunriver has been recognized as one of 130 locations in the WORLD that has been inducted into the International Dark Sky Places program? We’ve spent over 60 years protecting our pristine skies from light pollution! Sunriver is the only place that holds this title in all of Oregon — way to go, Sunriver!

DAY 4

FAMILY FUN IN THE SUNRIVER VILLAGE

Sunriver Village fun is on the menu for today! Take a morning walk or ride on the trail to The Village for breakfast at Hot Lava Café Baking and Coffee Company and order the GIANT cinnamon roll. It’s sooo big, you’ll probably need to share it with someone!

Mini Golf is next! The Village’s Mini Golf course offers 18 holes, including obstacles. Create lasting memories with everyone by playing a friendly game, or by keeping score for a competitive round of Mini Golf. Then, grab the whole family to bump each other on bumper cars! The Village Bumper Cars offers eight colorful cars for your delight.

Try your hand at the Rock Climbing Wall! Rock climbing builds strength, confidence, perseverance and most of all, it’s fun! And if climbing isn’t your thing, perhaps being flung high into the air, is! Get ready to pull some G’s with a thrilling experience on the Power Jump. You’ll be harnessed, locked in and then lifted vertically into the sky! How high you go depends on how hard you jump, you power the ride! It’s absolutely exhilarating! Just a reminder to check-in early and pull a number for Power Jump so you don’t have to wait in line for too long. Open weekly in August and on the weekends-only in September. Bring your face masks!

Stop for lunch at Blondie’s pizza, offering pizza (of course), along with sandwiches, wraps, salads, calzones and pasta! Something for everyone! A little something fun for the early evening … we offer rent-able Lawn Games, Tennis Courts and Pickleball Courts, which are available for guest use on Resort property – just ask the front desk, some require a reservation!

DAY 5

ALL ABOUT THE DESCHUTES RIVER

Today, you’re going to get wet!

Looking to step up your river-game? Try white water rafting with our partner, Sun Country Tours, as your next adventurous move! The Big Eddy Thriller allows for 1.5 hours on the water, covering 3 river miles and will take you through high desert scenery, old growth forest and lava rock formations. Book your trip ahead of time online. They offer morning and afternoon departures. Appropriate for kids age 6 and over. If you’re heading out in the morning, stop by Starbucks on the way out and grab breakfast goodies for everyone.

Looking for something a little more chill? Sunriver Resort offers a 6-mile float (2-3 hours depending on the vessel) out of the Marina. Choose your vessel of choice, whether it be a canoe, kayak or standup paddleboard and float down the Deschutes River among islands of tall grasses, past the horses, and you might even see a bald eagle! And yes, your furry friend is welcome on the vessel, too. Find everything you need in preparation to make a splash at the Marina Shop – sunscreen, water bags, swimsuits, etc.

After an action-packed day, we imagine your stomach is rumbling, so fill up with fresh pasta at Marcello’s Cucina Italiana, offering kid friendly and family-style options. Reservations are needed for inside dining and they also offer carry-out.

DAY 6

TAKE TO THE GOLF COURSE

Ready for some morning golf? Our Meadows course was named one of the Top 10 Destinations for Family Golf by Golf Digest, January 2016. Ranked #15 in Golf Advisor's Golfer's Choice Award: Best of Oregon Golf Courses 2019. Round up the family, hop in a golf cart or a golf board, and get on the green! Even if you aren’t a pro, this is a gorgeous course, and a great opportunity to learn new skills and be in nature. You can order food and beverages for pick-up, right off the touch-screen in your golf cart! You can find golf gear in the Merchant Trader Gift Shop area, in case you need anything.

Side Note: Kids golf FREE on Meadows and Woodlands courses after 5pm. Also, if you’re into trying out new clubs, Sunriver offers complimentary PXG clubs after 5pm as well!

Pick up lunch or dinner at Merchant Trader Café or Carson’s American Kitchen and enjoy your food at The Backyard. And if 18 holes is a bit much for your crew, perhaps the 9-hole putting course just outside the Backyard area suits you and your fam. You can order a beer and some food, kick back, and enjoy keeping an eye on the kids from the lawn area in the Backyard. Sounds heavenly!

As an alternative plan, it’s worth it to try to squeeze in a couple hours at The Cove, featuring a zero-entry pool and hot tub, private cabanas, a waterslide, nature walk and discovery area, lakeside trails and a spacious deck and lawn. The kids can play while you sip on a poolside beverage. Head over to The Spotted Frog Café for delicious lunchtime or early evening fare while enjoying the sunshine. Pool reservations can be made online before you arrive.

DAY 7

CAPTURE YOUR FAMILY MEMORIES

Looking to capture your memories with a professional photographer? Reach out to our resident Photographer, Doug Miller, to photograph your family with the sunniest of smiles while on vacation — perfect timing for those holiday cards!

Before you leave, don’t forget to get some shopping in! For beautiful assortment of memorable gifts and Sunriver sweatshirts, T-Shirts, and much more, head over to Merchant Trader Gift Shop, downstairs at The Lodge.
