In July 2027, Sunriver Resort will host the U.S. Adaptive Open Championship on the Meadows Course, and again in July 2028. For the Pacific Northwest’s premier golf destination, it’s the next chapter in a long history with championship golf—and the first time one of the USGA’s newest national championships will be played in the region.

A Legacy of Championship Golf at Sunriver Resort

For nearly sixty years, Sunriver Resort has been one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier golf destinations. The Resort is home to 63 holes across four award-winning courses and has hosted multiple USGA and PGA of America events, NCAA championships, and the Oregon Open. The selection to host the 2027 and 2028 U.S. Adaptive Open builds on that record and brings a championship of growing national significance to Central Oregon.

What the U.S. Adaptive Open Brings to Sunriver

The U.S. Adaptive Open is open to professional and amateur golfers with a Handicap Index of 36.4 or less and an eligible impairment confirmed by a WR4GD Pass—competitors playing at the highest level of the sport. For the Resort, hosting back-to-back championships is both a logistical undertaking and a cultural one.

“Hosting professional and amateur golf championships and being a partner to championship organizations has always been part of our brand,” says Josh Willis, VP of Operations. Since the U.S. Adaptive Open was announced, his investment has grown far beyond logistics, alongside his passion for adaptive golf.

Last summer, Willis attended the U.S. Adaptive Open at Woodmont Country Club in Maryland. “It’s as inspiring as anything you’ve ever seen in your life,” he says. He returned committed to making sure Central Oregon was ready, not just as a host site, but as a community.

Preparing the Meadows Course

On the Meadows Course, designed by John Fought, bunker modifications are already underway to accommodate the motorized single-rider carts many adaptive players rely on to navigate the course and position themselves to swing. Members and guests playing this season will notice the fescue on the bunker faces is cut shorter than usual, part of a broader set of adjustments being made to each bunker ahead of the championship. By the time competitors arrive in 2027, every inch of the course will be exactly where it needs to be.

This spring, Sunriver Resort will also welcome David Windsor, one of the USGA’s leading adaptive golf instructors, to train three dozen golf professionals from across the region, including the Resort’s PGA staff and key volunteers from Oregon Adaptive Sports.

Building a Long-Term Home for Adaptive Golf in Central Oregon

Willis envisions the Resort and the Meadows Course becoming a permanent home for adaptive golf in Central Oregon—a place where golfers can access instruction, practice on the driving range, and find a community year-round. Hosting the U.S. Adaptive Open in back-to-back years is just the beginning.
